Exercise Tip - Barbell Biceps Curl

Carrying Angle - Step 1

Question: Where do you grip when using a straight bar?

Answer: Your bar grip with a barbell is determined by what is called your "Carrying Angle."

Everyone has their own unique carrying angle determined by your structure. If you grip the bar too narrow you bring too much shoulder rotation into the exercise. If your grip is too wide it can cause stress at your elbow joints.

Here's how you determine your carrying angle: Stand in a upright position with your head straight, shoulders slightly retracted back, and your arms hanging naturally to your sides.

Carrying Angle - Step 2

Next, turn your palms (and forearms) facing forward. *Be sure to try and NOT rotate your upper arm (humerus bone) back while doing this.

This position now creates your individualized carrying angle where you should be gripping the bar.

Carrying Angle - Step 3

Place the bar in your hands while maintaining the carrying angle you created in step 2.

You are now on your way to safely and effectively creating great Biceps muscles!
